Magento or Not magento? that is the question.. :)

When or company decided to go online and look for a ecommerce solution, as usual, that first and apparently simple selection could lead to disaster if not properly made. There are hundred of shopping carts software, CMS, etc. mixed together with the "Big Guys" like yahoo ecommerce solutions, eBay or even Google products. Not to mention pre-builded MS-accepted ecommerce solutions based on .Net.

So, the question was about reallying in one of those "out_of_the_box" solutions or get for your OWN tools, software and online payment system, and after that which way to go?. :)

Coming from the FLOSS world, we decided to go for an Open Software Solution, the only way to have real and complete control on the software it self. Not to mention the ability to modify, customize or develop new modules/parts if necessary. Always having in mind the endless problems of choosing vaporware or close_to_die unsupported solutions.

Many phantom projects, not concluded ideas and vaporware create a cloud that avoids many companies from using FLOSS on a corporate environment. After some research, we decided to go for Magento, a "New Born" platform for ecommerce. New but having PHP and Ajax as father & mother, the son couldn't be bad. :)

Why magento?.

1. It has a company behind it. Its not vaporware, so it gives some Peace of mind to know that AFTER the community of enthusiastic people you can call support too. :)
2. And impressive software design and use of PHP POP capabilities was made on Magento, expanding the limits to what a GET/POST php app used to be.
3. Interface. The design team create a hard2learn but really effective way of creating new interfaces on a MVC environment.
4. The use of web2.0 standards. None of the others gets even close to magento when using ajax, rss, tags clouds or any other web2.0 tendencies.

Problems with magento?.

Many.. :) but none strong enough like to runaway from it. Basically you have to make some effort and understand how it works.. after that, is time to celebrate. :)
